The Oakland Indie Awards stands as one of my favorite events in Oakland, CA. Beyond celebrating local businesses and artists, this annual event provides a space that brings the people of Oakland together to celebrate the very things that make our city unique; the food, culture, and shared love for the arts.
So let’s get to the good part – the food! The local food vendors never fail to amaze me. There are usually anywhere from 10-15 food vendors serving bite sized samples of heaven; ranging from gourmet dutch desserts, decadent handmade ice cream and freshly baked pies and more. Oh and did I mention, its free! If you ever find yourself at this event; you know where to find me.
I’ll start with Nieves Cinco de Mayo serving their bestseller the Mangonada, a slightly tart, crunch mango chunks with shaved ice and a hint of chamoy sauce for rich color and creamy scoop of ice cream. The final touch is spicy chili powder that gives it the perfect balance.
Stroopie Gourmet was definitely a favorite; my first authentic stroopwafel experience. The owner, Todd showed me exactly howthese delicious treats are made.
Next up is Mamacitas Cafe, serving Cardamom Glaze Donut Kebabs that are simply amazing. Beyond delicious donuts and coffee, this women owned enterprise also supports youth leadership development and training; making their goodies that much better.
And for the pie lovers, PieTisserie was serving mouth watering gourmet mini pies. I sampled the lemon blueberry and had to pinch myself; I thought I went to pie heaven.
