3 reasons to include travel to your self-care routine

I’ve come to realize the importance of a regular self-care routine. I’m talking about building “mental health” days into your work schedule, treating yourself to a massage, or taking that art class you’ve been talking about for a while. It’s simply setting intentions for yourself and unapologetically taking time for the things that matter most. Just as getting my ends trimmed or going to see my dentist twice a year are on my MUST do list, adding travel has changed my life for the better and here is why.

Unplug

Traveling helps me be more present and live in the moment. It’s a unique window into the daily lives of people in different parts of the world. Recently, I visited the Guna Yala Islands which is an indigenous province in northeast Panama. I stayed on a small island with a Guna family, ate the fresh catch of the day, and basked in the sun while listening to the sounds of the Caribbean sea. Stepping outside of my normal routine to simply be and appreciate my surroundings is always refreshing.

Deliberately be Intentional

Traveling helps me take a step back to evaluate the things I do and challenges me to be become comfortable being uncomfortable. I often make time to reassess what is most important to me and what brings me the most joy even when it isn’t easy. Through traveling, I’ve learned that I simply value experiences over things and I am okay with that.

Reflection – Building a Strong Sense of Self

The more enriching life experiences I have both in the U.S and aboard, the more confident I am in navigating my daily life. Taking care of myself means allowing myself the space to simply be. Reflecting on where I am and where I want to be is invigorating and crucial to the my routine self care process.

As mother, I’m often asked what do I do for myself.. I started living a minimal life so I don’t buy things often and this post helped me answer that question. I travel for myself. I really wish I would have started doing this sooner. It’s definitely therapeutic for me.
